4 Supplements to help your customers get their children school ready
23 Aug 2018

It’s that time of year again – Back to School. Thousands of young, and not so young, Irish children will head back to their school desks over the next couple of weeks. And while many a parent is glad to get back into a routine, your customers want to be sure that their children remain healthy throughout the school year.

The first step for a healthy body and mind for any member of the family include a well-balanced diet, adequate sleep, keeping active and drinking enough water.

Here’s a list of 4 supplements you customers can get to keep children healthy and happy.

1. A children’s multivitamin and mineral supplement

A good multivitamin will help to limit nutritional deficiencies and give them a boost to avoid mental and physical fatigue. It’s important that the supplement is appropriate for the age of the child, as some vitamins can be dangerous in too high levels. Examples are the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

2. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential in the human body, and even more so in young children to maintain and grow healthy bones. As always, the best way to get Vitamin D is through sunlight, but there’s not much to spare during the Irish winter. While foods like cod liver oil, egg yolks, salmon, mackerel and sardine contain vitamin D, it isn’t always a reliable source so a supplement of 400IU to 1 000IU is recommended for children up to 18 years.

3. Probiotics

The importance of gut health cannot be denied, and friendly bacteria is essential to maintain overall health and for the body to function properly. Probiotic supplements help to limit the impact of bad bacteria when they do occur, assist with mineral absorption and overall support of the immune system.

4. Omega oils

The effects of Omega 3 fatty acids have been well studied and have shown that they improve cognitive function which includes enhanced hand-eye coordination, better attention span, social skills and behaviour. It has even shown to improve intelligence test scores. Unfortunately, children are often consuming omega 6, found in pastries, crisps, biscuits and processed foods which can make their brains sluggish, preventing them from functioning optimally in an education setting.
